What kind of a gift?

How to select a gift for your family and friends

There are a lot of criteria how to select a gift. The most frequent questions are:

What she / he needs?

Durable, or one time use gift?

Crazy or serious gift?

Personal gift (intimate or personalized) or not?

Opportunity: anniversaries, Christmas, diploma, birth, wedding, new house, new car ...

Different and unique or regular (usual) gift?

According to reviews I've read, the most frequent gifts are jewellery and fashion. But we know that jewellery frequently becomes obsolete – is not "fashion" any more. So we keep buying and buying…

The most important criteria when selecting gifts should not be provoking more problems. Here the example what I mean: a person that receives a gift should not ask her(him)self: Where I will put it? Or, I can not combine it with anything (no such shoes, shirts etc.)

Gift card is a good gift for young people, because they always need money, but not the best gift for a person that has its regular or high income. This is why I personally prefer durable products, personalized if possible, and that will serve the purpose. If I suspect that my gift will be put in some corner and forgotten, I prefer to give flowers instead.

Jewellery box is sometimes better gift than jewellery itself, especially in a case when a person already has a lot of jewellery. Jewellery box can accept any style of jewellery, right? Usually, jewellery boxes outlive jewellery.

The same with home décor: It is difficult to buy a vase to someone that does not want to mix styles. So check first the kitchen or living room of that person, especially colours. It you want to give tea box, ask or check the kitchen and try to select the design that combines.

Some 30 years ago I gave a gift box with a necklace to my friend. After some decades I noticed that she still has the jewellery box, but no trace of the necklace.

I personally do not like to receive clothes. There are a lot of things that can go wrong: colour and especially size …

When I am selecting gifts, I check among the next options:

Spouse: tea box, vase, vintage plates and decorative vintage phones, purses, jewellery boxes, treasure boxes, combined with jewellery or without.

Mother: tea box, jewellery box, other home décor.

Father: men’s jewellery box or something of his hobby.

New-born: room decoration, memory or treasure box.

Friend: the same as already mentioned above. And so on …

My second criteria is that a gift has not to be expensive, but not too cheap either, because very cheap, regardless of the fact that can look nice, frequently means industrial, does not last long, which means wasting of natural resources. If it is unique or personalized gift, the price does not matter, it can be (relatively) cheap as well.

Selecting handmade and unique gifts should always fit. The worth of such a gift has more value than it is paid for, especially compared to industrially made products. We all want that our gifts last as much as possible. I like to hear after some time the next words: “I still have your gift”.

I always felt bad when I received a gift that I could not use. And it was happening too often. I remember when I received a short and I felt bad because it was too tight and I could not use it. The person that gave me this gift is not alive any more, but in the meantime I lost weight. So I can use it. Gifts can mean a lot especially when received from the person that is not alive anymore.

If you look our shop, you will see that we organized products that fit to women's tastes, men's tastes and children. But we noticed something very interesting: much less gifts are bought for men than for women (!).

Probably the most important division of gifts is aiming at the opportunity: wedding, home décor, anniversaries. Sometimes the same item can be given in different opportunities. For example tea box or jewellery box can be given to men, women, girls, as Christmas, wedding or anniversary gift etc.

This way anytime we design a new model, the first question we ask ourselves is: will the product last? If the answer is yes, only then we make a next step and make a design. It is not easy always, because it is not common to find good and correctly made raw material.
